What Are Medicare Supplement Insurance Policies?

Medicare Parts A and B pay 80 percent of the costs of covered medical care and hospital treatments. The remaining 20 percent must usually be paid out-of-pocket. However, Medicare Supplement Insurance Policies cover the out-of-pocket medical costs that Medicare does not cover. Medicare Supplement Insurance Policies should not be confused with Medicare Advantage Insurance Plans, which replace Medicare Parts A and B. In fact, individuals who have a Medicare Advantage Insurance Plan may not enroll in a Medicare Supplement Policy.

Policy Components

Medicare Supplement Insurance Policies are also known as “Medigap” policies because they are designed to address the coverage gap created by the out-of-pocket costs that Medicare does not cover. The combination of Medicare and a Medicare Supplement Insurance Policy provides full coverage for basic medical care and inpatient hospital treatment, providing clients with financial peace of mind.
